You will be doing a simple two beaker experiment to observe rates of reaction.
5 marks for finishing the questions and placing your maple leaf or frog on your paper.

SIMPLE TWO BEAKER EXPERIMENTS: 10 marks: I would like you to try the following experiments and write OR type your observations on a separate piece of paper or digital document. You will need your maple leaf (or a piece of paper with your name on it). FYI if you are unable to make it to class, there is a version of this experiment which can be done from your home kitchen.
MATERIALS:
TWO SMALL BEAKERS: beaker A and beaker B
VINEGAR
BAKING SODA
FOOD COLOURING
2 ALKASELTZER TABLETS
A SCIENCE KETTLE that is only used for LABS.
PROCEDURE
1. HOT VS COLD . Get your cameras out to photograph this experiment: put a drop of food colouring in boiling water. At the same time, put a drop of food colouring in cold tap water. . Observe the diffusion that takes place over one minute. Place your maple leaf beside the boiling water and cold water and take a picture. Write your observations. Explain how this relates to the rates of reaction.
2. CONCENTRATED VS DILUTE: Put some full strength vinegar in a small beaker ( A )and a teaspoon of vinegar in another small beaker (B) . Fill glass B with WATER so it has the same amount of liquid as glass A. Now beaker A has full strength vinegar, beaker B has dilute vinegar.
Now add about a spoonful of baking soda to glass B and glass A. Observe what happens. Take a picture and make sure your maple leaf is in the pic. Explain how this relates to the rates of reaction.
3. WHOLE OR CRUMBLED: Add one WHOLE tablet of alkaseltzer to a small beaker of water and another CRUSHED, OR PULVERIZED tablet of alkaseltzer in another beaker of the same volume of water. Take a picture and make sure your maple leaf is in the pic. Explain how this relates to the rates of reaction.
