codominance

What if the heterozygous trait exhibited codominance?  in this case, two alleles can code for co-dominant traits.  That is, neither is dominant over the other.  Blood type is an example of this:

A is codominant to B
A is dominant over O
B is dominant over O

Possible genotypes:

heterozygous AB blood gives both type A protein and type  B protein on the erythrocytes.

homozygous AA gives blood type A  protein on the erythrocytes
homozygous BB is blood type B protein on the erythrocytes

Heterozygous AO is gives blood type A
Heterozygous BO is blood type B

Sex linkage

 SEX LINKED GENES

In the following post, I will refer to "male" and "female".  This refers to people with male sex organs or people with female sex organs.  People with these organs can identify with a diverse range of gender such as:

Man, woman, nonbinary. This gender identify is not presumed by the presence of male or female sex organs

They might also identify as
LGBTQ2S++

The following descriptions are biological descriptions refer to
male= male sex organs like testes, producing sperm
female= female sex organs like ovaries, producing eggs.

The sex chromosomes are XX and XY in humans. Some alleles are located on the X chromosome. But very few on the Y chromosome.  Remember that people who are  females have the genotype XX and people who are males have XY.

The Y chromosome carries very little information, only enough to influence the embryo on the path towards male primary and secondary characteristics.

Meanwhile, many RECESSIVE ALLELES are located on the X chromosome, including
1. hemophilia, the inability to clot blood
2. colourblindness inability to tell the difference between red and green colour
3.  baldness

These characteristics are far more common in people with male sex organs  than people with female sex organs because  people with male organs have only one X. And if that X contains the recessive allele, they will show the phenotype.  Meanwhile, people with  female organs may have the recessive and their dominant genes on their other X will protect them.  For example
An example of using a punnet square to calculate probability is here:

Some things to note about sex linkage:  Signs of sex linked alleles are:
1. more genotypic males get the phenotype, but genotypic females can be carriers
2.  males can inherit from mother but not father (because males get their X from mom)
3.  genotypic females have an extra X and this protects them.  Females must be homozygous to show the sex linked phenotype.

FYI if you were born a male and you want to know if you're colourblind:  Test yourself here: But careful, if you are a genetically male, you might find out you are colour blind!  Apparently most people find out they are colourblind from their science teacher !

Welcome to Science Class

  Welcome to Science 10!

This course is a lab course which will cover Chemistry, Physics, and Biology   It is expected that you will receive most of your course content on line and we will do labs and field study in class.  You will hand in ALL assignments as paper assignments or through Microsoft Teams.    I have set up my class so that the majority of the class notes shall be distributed on line from this blog.

The majority of class time will be lab work (chemistry and physics experiments, microscope work) and also field study (walking to Trout Lake).  My windows shall be open ALL THE TIME to give us nice fresh air.

ASSIGNMENT 1. HAND IN YOUR CONSENT FORM  /5

Please get the consent form signed and bring it back to class. It will give us the ability to walk to Trout Lake or Renfrew Ravine or go to a local field study at any time that I announce during the term.   Bring this consent form to class.   evaluation:  5 points for handing this in

As we go into your semester , I would like to prepare for learning during the respiratory season of flu, RSV and covid 19.

SAFETY MEASURES:

In class, our safety measures will include:

- good ventilation. I will be using a CO2 monitor to check the air quality in our class. If this number goes above 800ppm CO2 then there is a 1% rebreathed fraction meaning that 1 breath out of 100 is from someone else's lungs. Beyond this point I will ask for volunteers to wear a mask so that my class remains accessible to those who are medically vulnterable

- wear a mask! It is encouraged because you will be an ally for those who are medically vulnerable or those who live with people who are vulnerable.

- no academic penalties for being home sick, for isolating or for a +ive diagnosis of covid-19 either in yourself or a household member. You only need to email me to tell me of your positive test, and I will excuse you from homework.

- windows shall be open in my class to admit adequate ventilation.  Further we will conduct class outside wherever possible as outside is safer than inside at this time.  Dress for the weather and be prepared to be outdoors rain or shine.

Types of Reactions Notes

 TEACHING NOTES:

First lets review the main types of reactions:

notes on types of reactions

Study Guide  and answer key below

answer key to your chapter 6 worksheet

Chemical reactions may be categorized as follows :

1.     Synthesis
2.     Decomposition
3.     Single replacement
4.     Double replacement

5.     Combustion
       Cellular Respiration
6.     Oxidation of metals

A Synthesis reaction:
element     +   element    -->    compound

Decomposition reaction:
Compound    -->   element     +     element
Or

Compound --> smaller compound    +   element

DOUBLE REPLACEMENT

single replacement
IN ADDITION TO THE FOUR TYPES ABOVE, THERE ARE ALSO THREE MORE KINDS of reaction TO KNOW:

Combustion:  combustion may happen to any *organic compound* meaning any compound made of carbon, hydrogen and/or oxygen...
Carbon based compound+ oxygen --> carbon dioxide + water
+ heat and light energy

Cell respiration looks like combustion,
BUT IT IS NOT. YOUR CELLS ARE NOT COMBUSTING.  The carbon based compound in this case is glucose, a simple sugar.

Glucose +   oxygen -->  carbon dioxide + water + energy for cell

Oxidation reaction

Metal +  oxygen   -->   metal oxide

ACID BASE REACTIONS ARE ALL NEUTRALIZATION REACTIONS
