Calcium and Water Lab

Calcium and Water lab

Introduction:

Calcium is an alkali earth metal.  When Calcium bumps into water, it
Will cause water to fall apart.  Calcium will then join with one of the atoms of water.

Question:
What new compounds get formed?
Possibilities:  These are the combinations that we can get
1.      Calcium oxide        CaO white
2.     Calcium hydroxide    CaOH white.
3.     H2    Explosive gas
4.     O2    flammable gas

Summarize the demo
Put Calcium metal into a beaker of coldish water.

Colour change – milky white colour
Temperature change – cold to hot.     WE CALL THIS AN EXOTHERMIC REACTION.
Bubbles came out – meaning a gas was formed

This might be hydrogen gas OR Oxygen gas.
