  Welcome to Science 10! 

This course is a lab course which will cover Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Astronomy.   It is expected that you will receive most of your course content on line and we will do labs and field study in class.  You will hand in ALL assignments through Microsoft Teams.    I have set up my class so that the majority of the class notes shall be distributed on line from this blog.  

The majority of class time will be lab work (chemistry and physics experiments, microscope work) and also field study (walking to Trout Lake).  My windows shall be open ALL THE TIME to give us nice fresh air  so dress warmly!

 It will give us the ability to walk to Trout Lake or Renfrew Ravine or Central Park at any time that I announce during the term.   Bring this consent form to class.

As we go into your semester, I would like to prepare for learning during the second wave of Covid 19.  I would like to remind everyone that the best way to protect one another in class is to keep our distance (2m), wash our hand frequently AND to wear a mask especially in indoor spaces.  Further, the greatest protection you have is getting vaccinated! 

I invite you to flatten the curve by these simple measures! We will beat Covid 19 together!   Further, all of my class assignments will be posted here on this blog and therefore, if anyone misses any class due to illness, or self-isolation, you can easily keep up with the work. 

SAFETY MEASURES:

 In class, our safety measures will include:

- physical distance, as much as  possible in our class.

- wear a mask! It is strongly encouraged by our VSB!  (if you have medical reasons for not wearing a mask, please have your guardian inform me) 

- no academic penalties for being home sick, or isolating, or you found out your friend has covid and you think you'd better isolate, or you are afraid of the covid situation.

- windows shall be open in my class to admit adequate ventilation. 

- we can conduct class outside sometimes to do field study

- I encourage ALL STUDENTS TO GET THE VACCINE!!!  I myself am vaccinated!

- if you do not have the vaccine, the following places are dangerous:  ANY SPACE WHERE YOU SHARE AIR WITH PEOPLE NOT WEARING A MASK INDOORS.

a.     Hair tied back, no loose clothing, shoes are closed

Bohr Diagrams and Lewis Diagrams

  

We will practice drawing Bohr Diagrams and Lewis diagrams.   You should work through this Study guide on the same topic as well as the worksheet handed out in class.  Finish these two worksheets and upload pics of your covalent compound "cookies" upload them on TEAMS  for 5 marks.

Plants have defenses too!

 We have been learning about the immune system in class to get ready to meet a UBC researcher who studies immunology.  Did you know that plants have defenses too against herbivory?  Some of these defenses are chemical and some are physical.

Foxglove, or digitalis contains toxic chemicals which include cardiac glycosides.  

plants evolved defenses when the first sign of herbivory occurred in evolutionary history. 

Some of these are chemical defenses in the form of poisons. In fact many drugs are derived from plant poisons.  Digitalis is a drug derived from the flower foxglove.   The seed of an apple contains a small amount of  cyanogenic glycoside:  cyanide.  

Plants which contain volatile organic compounds are often very aromatic.  Thyme, Oregano, Rosemary and Lavender are plants which have alot of volatile organic molecules. Not all VOCs are used for herbivory defense.  Some plants use VOCs to attract pollinators. 

Pieris Japonica contains grayanotoxins I, II, III (polyhydroxylated diterpenes) which can cause arrythmias, seizures, vomitting.  

Spines, thorns and hairs also discourage herbivory even silica on horsetails. 

Scavenger hunt 

Take a picture (with your name in it) of the following specimens found in our school grounds:

1.  Foxglove, or Digitalis 

2.   A thorny stem

3.  Hairy leaves

4.  Horsetail. (look at the silica under the microscope).  

5. Lavendula stoechus. (lavender, which has volatile organic compounds)

6.  Pieris Japonica (there is only one specimen I know of on school grounds.
