Looking at the leaf cross section and exploring the biology of leaves

Today we will evaluate our cell quiz and focus on chloroplasts and photosynthesis

You will make a prepared slide of a leaf and also a  leaf cross section and explain how each part helps the leaf perform photosynthesis

LEAF OBSERVATIONS

1.  GO to the school garden and pick up a leaf.
Leaf Lab

Purpose is to observe properties of a deciduous leaf

1.      Draw the leaf (both sides).  The drawing is 1/3 of the page.
Observe some characteristics and label any parts you see.
(colour, how are the two sides different?).  What do you think
the parts are for?

Darker on top than the bottom – Why? More
Pigment for photosynthesis.  They photosynthesize
using chlorophyll and there is more sunlight reaching the top.

Veins – send nutrients and water and sugar around the plant
Veins are moving up from the ground. They transport water
From the ground.

The top side has a waxy covering – cuticle. Bottom side doesn’t have a cuticle

2.      Make a prepared slide of a tiny part of the leaf.
Now carefully draw your leaf
View using
a.     half a page for low
b.     half a page for medium OR large.

3.      Make a prepared slide of a tiny little sample of grass
a.     low
b.     medium

4.      Observe a leaf cross section and label parts. Draw under
a. medium or high power

Reviewing the cell

NEXT PERIOD THERE IS A QUIZ ON VOCAB WORDS
from 1-2 and also the following material below

Homework: make a list of vocabulary words from 1-2 and 1-3.

Today we reviewed the parts of the cell and discussed the role of the MITOCHONDRIA and Chloroplasts

The MITOCHONDRIA is the "powerhouse" of the cell.

Cellular Respiration takes place in the mitochondria:

C6H12O6 glucose + O2 + H2    H2O + CO2        ATP energy is generated

ALL OF YOUR ORGAN SYSTEMS keep this reaction going in your mitochondria.
Digestive system provides the glucose.
Cardiovascular system  and respiration provide the oxygen and takes away the carbon dioxideExcretory system gets rid of the water.

The plant cell has CHLOROPLASTS, which can make glucose through

Photosynthesis
 H2O + CO2   →  C6H12O6 glucose  + O2 + H2O

Microscope work

We divided the  class in half and trained people on how to use the microscope.  Next, the first group trained the second and the teacher evaluated the skills of group 2.  We looked at various specimens.  Also, we did a worksheet out of the grade 8 workbook and took notes on the cell chapter

An Introduction to The Cell

We will be working with microscopes and have an introduction to the Cell as the basic unit of life
Some of the basic concepts in the BC Science 8 website here

We asked the question How Do You Know Something Is Alive? and looked at the criteria for living things and took notes on the parts the cell..

Welcome back

We will return a test which was done before the holidays and do corrections.

And: We will do an experiment and I will ask you to get into groups to write up this experiment. Write up both parts.  Group of two or three allowed. You will write your own procedure, observations etc. Follow the format: Format of Lab Report
